IS THERE MORE TO THIS? After an abrupt closing of a popular beach on Memorial Day in Chicago, now comes word that the Independence Day firework displays are off. Oh, there will be the usual Navy Piers shows, but they last for 15-minutes, but there will be one on July 4. No, this is the huge spectacular that draws hundreds of thousands to the city. Come to think of it, that was the main reason the beach was closed. Too many people plus add in the heat and it was enough for the shutdown. And the new mayor, Rahm Emanuel, agreed with the decision. We must note that last year the show was split into three
separate shows, much to the dismay of many. Now, it's off - - completely. The reason given was simple; the financial situation. The underbelly of the reason may also be the security nightmares and the deluge of people rushing the lake front and other areas. With the smaller show still on at Navy Pier, one can only wonder if thousands will still flock to the lake front tourist attraction, thus causing more trouble, because of the crowd size. And, when talking to others about the closure of the beach on a hot day, the subject of violence and gangs come up. Is there more to the issue here?
