There may be another reason as to why a news consortium has decided to quarantine themselves in a room. They note that it is all about exit polling, but is it? That reason could very well be the the Internet and its use a getting information to the people.
In any event, that will not be admitted, but this group is now behind closed doors and examining results and will do so throughout the afternoon. When they do emerge, they will attempt to get the early exit poll results and get them out - in the hopes of not being wrong, or relying on the Internet and even phones.
But, this group will only report on trends and not the results of those exit polls in states close. This is being reported on a few sites, but most notably, at poynter.org. The news organizations that are represented are ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox and the Associated Press (AP).
Again, they can report general trends but cannot report the results of exit polls until the polls close in each state. Does this tip the scale as to the underlying reason? Project for Excellence in Journalism director Tom Rosenstiel noted, “with Internet penetration and the speed of social media, that (data) would be known pretty widely.”
As election day 1972 approached, the underbelly of Watergate was brewing, Nixon was reelected, but the second term was spent trying to get rid of him. This, too, will happen, as the truth about Libya cannot be avoided - and Fast and Furious. In 1980, as election day neared, hostages were still being held, long gas lines and high unemployment afflicted the nation. In 1979, our ambassador was killed. That hasn't happened again until Libya.
