Elvis Presley honored with new Music Icons stamp By Tim O'Brien Entertainment
Even though Elvis Presley already had a stamp produced in his honor, there is another one on the way. Today, the United States Post Office revealed the next stamp.
The stamp is part of the Music Icons series (see photo).
In a Graceland release, it noted that Priscilla Presley will join Postmaster General Megan Brennan in dedicating the stamp on Aug. 12. It will take place at Graceland in Memphis as part of this year’s Elvis Week celebration. The public is encouraged to tweet about this news using #ElvisForever. Meanwhile, the post office is teaming with Sony Music’s RCA/Legacy Recordings and will release a special CD in commemoration of the event. The CD is titled "ELVIS FOREVER."
On the CD are 18 songs and it features a special recording of "If I Can Dream." The CD will be available on Aug. 12 as well, online and at select U.S. postal offices. This stamp features a 1955 black-and-white photograph of Elvis. It was taken by William Speer. The description follows, in full, from the release: The square stamp pane resembles a vintage 45 rpm record sleeve. One side of the pane includes 16 stamps while the image of a sliver of a record seems to peek out of the top of the sleeve. An image of Presley performing was shot by photographer Alfred Wertheimer and the logo for the Music Icons series appear on the reverse side (above) of the stamp pane. Antonio Alcalá of Alexandria, VA, served as the art director and designed the stamp pane with Leslie Badani, also of Alexandria, VA.
Now, as noted earlier, this is not the first time Elvis has been featured on a stamp. In 1993, the first one was produced and it, according to The Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum, "the most popular U.S. commemorative stamp of all time." Music Icons started in 2013. The first honored were Lydia Mendoza, Johnny Cash and Ray Charles. Last year Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin were honored.
The following text borders the block of 16 stamps:
“During his illustrious career, rock-and-roll superstar Elvis Presley starred in dozens of feature films, won three Grammy Awards, and recorded 18 number one singles: Heartbreak Hotel, I Want You, I Need You, I Love You, Don’t Be Cruel, Hound Dog, Love Me Tender, Too Much, All Shook Up , (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear, Jailhouse Rock, Don’t, Hard Headed Woman, A Big Hunk O’ Love, Stuck On You, It’s Now Or Never, Are You Lonesome Tonight?, Surrender, Good Luck Charm, Suspicious Minds.”
The "Elvis: That's The Way It Is" at 45 exhibit, which is a part of the VIP tour experience, will be in place until February 2016, and the "I Shot Elvis" exhibit will be in place until February 2017.
