2021 - Golden Globes - nominations

2/3/2021

This year the phrase "I haven't seen many nominated films" with likely be more true than other years. We hear it every year, even when blockbusters get nominated, but the pandemic really knocked movie theaters out of the game, for the most part. So, watching a movie at home is what many did. A movie at home to me is TV, but that is for another story.

The 2021 Golden Globes nominations were announced via TV this morning (Feb. 3). Well, they do have TV categories, but that gets ignored by me since the Emmys have come and gone. This is not a normal award season and I am not even going to pretend it is.

There is great work being done but the abundance of product can get in the way. Now, there will be way too many left out so those "snubs and overlooked" stories are useless now.

- For me, a movie is in a movie theater, not released on Amazon Prime or Netflix. If you do not have a streaming service, you are out of luck. With a movie theater, you can go. How many streaming services does one want to buy?
- Have you noticed that you are paying for a streaming service to watch TV shows you watched on free TV in the past?
- Movie stars are taking over TV as well.
- With the combo on TV (20) and film (22), Netflix rules with 42 nominations. See what I mean about not seeing them? If you do not have Netlfix, you are out of luck. See Deadline here.
- "Mank" (movies) and "The Crown" (TV) lead the way with sex each.
- "Schitt's Creek" is echoing its Emmy night sweep. Perhaps that is more group think than anything else.
- One could say, that like superhero and "Star Wars" films, TV has too much royal family. Even if "The Crown" is good, I am not watching it. The royal family dramas bore me.
- Will anyone tune in this year? The show has tanked lately as viewers flee. The reasons? There are plenty. Hollywood will be the last to tell you the truth as to why, so your gut is likely correct. Go with that reason - it does not need to be explained. Hint: it is not the work as that is top-notch.
