Rock Falls, Illinois - RED CROSS: Water distribution will pause at 8:00 p.m. this evening and then finish up between 7:00 a.m. and noon tomorrow, February 15th. As of 7:00 p.m. this evening, Red Cross and community volunteers have collaborated to distribute a total of 75,600 bottles of water in Rock Falls. The American Red Cross emergency response vehicle has been used as a mobile warming center throughout the day.
I could tell at the press conference last night that Mayor Bill Wescott is a leader. A major problem was fought head on. First priority was not pointing fingers but solving the problem and getting the water back on. And now, sure, we have to boil it, but we have water.
FEB. 14...WATER BACK ON AT 8:30 (more like 9:15-9:30 a.m.) AND IT was RUSTY, ETC. BOIL ORDER UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE...WATER AND SANITATION ISSUE IN ROCK FALLS UPDATE: 7 P.M. BRIEFING, 02/13/14: NO CAUSE NOTED AND NO TIMELINE ON IT BEING FIXED. Rock Falls residents have been assured by Mayor Bill Wescott that tankers with water are ready in case there is a fire in the city during the water stoppage. Also, the city teams with its neighbor on matters such as this and they are on alert as well. Meanwhile, businesses will once again be closed Friday, as will schools, if need be. The high school is on institute day, so that is not a problem, but the other notices will go out at 6 a.m. if problems persists. Briefing over at Rock Falls City Hall. Emergency plans are now in effect. Places that are being prepped. Rock Falls High School, Middle School, Thome and the Community Building. Also, Civic Plaza 1 & 2 and Willowwood and Transitions. No sewage has leaked and no, the water supply has and was not contaminated. But it will take at least a couple more hours to pump the sewage at the lift station. The city is working on 12 hour timeline on the first phase and will assess again. Next update is 10 p.m. It is imperative for us residents not to flush the toilets. As much as 22,000 gallons of sewage needs to be pumped out for this process to work. Water and porta potties are being set up art the above locations. AVENUE G BRIDGE WILL BE CLOSED FOR WORK TO BE DONE AND ASSESSED. Yes, it is Valentine's Day Friday, but places in Rock Falls will be closed. There was a power outage at around noon-1 p.m. Thursday...and that may have triggered it. But, Wescott did note, that it was a "failure to pump raw sewage from new lift station to sewer plant" that actually led to the led to water shutoff...Again, no contamination has occurred. Oh, and please do not flush the toilets by melting snow or using a bucket of water. That adds to the amount that will need to be pumped. Those with private wells are also asked not to use their water. 190,000 gallons of raw sewage was eventually pumped out in that amount of time to get water service back - astounding.
For O'Brien News Service: OF COURSE, SOME DISTRIBUTION IS GOING ON NOW, TOO: RED CROSS, Rock Falls, Illinois — Due to the water outage in Rock Falls, the American Red Cross will be distributing water in the following locations starting at 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning:
Rock Falls City Hall located at 603 West 10th Street
Rock Falls High School located at 101-12th Avenue
Rock Falls Middle School located at 1701-12th Avenue
Thome School located at 500 East 5th Street
American Red Cross volunteers are on standby in case additional assistance is needed.
Now, I live downtown and the power was out temporarily..I was also at Wal Mart at 4 p.m. and it was very crowded there. Sav-a-Lot had a note on its door saying they were out of water. Businesses went dark as they were shutdown. It it persists, help the handicapped and the elderly. Pipes that have no running water may freeze up and cause other problems. The winter has seen that already.

Snowden stole co-worker’s password to gain access to secret databanks: NSA
One reason National Security Agency (NSA) former analyst Edward Snowden was able to gain such broad access to a wide variety of agency’s secret documents was that he copied a password from a co-worker who has since resigned. After Snowden was denied access to NSANet, the agency's computer network which connects into many of the agency’s classified databases, he persuaded a co-worker, an NSA civilian employee, to use his – the co-worker’s -- Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) certificate to gain access. The NSA told Congress Snowden used what the agency describes as “digital deception”: the civilian NSA employee entered his password on Snowden’s computer, not realizing that Snowden was able to capture the password, allowing him even greater access to classified information. Once he gained access to NSANet, Snowden released a “Web crawler” inside the system. The crawler automatically indexed the NSANet, and using the passwords Snowden held – one his, one or more those of co-workers – copied every document in its path.
